Where did the Star of Life Symbol come from?

The Star of Life is a widely recognized symbol used to represent emergency medical services (EMS) and medical assistance. It consists of a blue, six-pointed star outlined with a white border, with a snake and staff in the center. The history of the Star of Life can be traced back to the mid-20th century and is closely associated with the development of modern EMS systems.

In 1963, the American National Academy of Sciences, National Research Council, published a report titled “Accidental Death and Disability: The Neglected Disease of Modern Society.” This groundbreaking report highlighted the alarming number of preventable deaths and disabilities resulting from accidents and emphasized the need for a coordinated emergency medical response.

Following the publication of the report, a joint committee was formed by the American Medical Association (AMA) and the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) to address the deficiencies in emergency medical care. The committee, known as the Committee on Trauma, sought to improve communication and standardize emergency care to enhance the chances of survival and recovery.

In 1965, a staff of the American Medical Association’s newly formed Department of Emergency Medical Services developed a logo for the National Academy of Sciences’ Committee on Trauma. The logo was intended to identify medical personnel and facilities that provided quality emergency care.

The original logo featured a blue staff with a single snake coiled around it, which was the traditional symbol of medicine. In 1973, a revised version was created by Leo R. Schwartz, an artist and emergency medical technician (EMT). Schwartz redesigned the logo to include the six-pointed star, symbolizing the six essential EMS functions: detection, reporting, response, on-scene care, care in transit, and transfer to definitive care.

The revised logo, known as the Star of Life, gained widespread recognition and acceptance in the EMS community. It quickly became associated with emergency medical services around the world, and its use expanded beyond just identifying medical personnel and facilities to serving as a universal symbol for emergency medical care.

The Star of Life symbolizes the commitment and dedication of EMS professionals in providing timely, compassionate, and life-saving care to those in need. It has become an integral part of the EMS culture and is displayed on ambulances, uniforms, equipment, and other medical-related items to indicate the presence of qualified emergency medical personnel.

Today, the Star of Life is recognized internationally and serves as a powerful emblem of emergency medical services and the importance of efficient and effective prehospital care.
